The Meddler received some pretty positive reviews when it premiered at TIFF last year, promising a charming and poignant new film from Lorene Scafaria, the filmmaker behind the flawed Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. The trailer for her latest effort looks far more interesting, with Susan Sarandon as a persistent mother and recent widow who struggles to bond with her screenwriter daughter, played by Rose Byrne.

There’s a reason why Byrne’s character is named Lori: The Meddler is based on Scafaria’s own experiences and relationship with her mother. And while Byrne’s comedic efforts in recent years will draw audiences to the film, Sarandon looks like the real star of this show as an earnest, devoted and generous mom whose efforts to bond with her daughter come across as more smothering than mothering. Also, she’s very fond of showing up unannounced with bags of bagels. It’s quite charming.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini has happily relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others—as well as her own—and find a new purpose in life.

J.K. Simmons (as Sam Elliott, apparently) co-stars as Sarandon’s new love interest, and the trailer shows off a bit of their delightful chemistry. The film features a great supporting cast, including Cecily Strong, Casey Wilson, Sarah Baker, Jason Ritter, Michael McKean, Randall Park, Lucy Punch and Transparent’s Amy Landecker.

The Meddler hits theaters on April 22.
