Shannen Doherty Settles Suit Against Ex-Manager In Breast Cancer Insurance Battle
Shannen Doherty has settled a lawsuit she filed against her former business management firm, Tanner Mainstain Glynn & Johnson, for failure to pay for health insurance in 2014. Doherty says the ability to access proper healthcare earlier would have prevented her breast cancer from spreading.
According to documents obtained by Us Weekly, the parties settled the suit for a confidential sum on August 19. The former Charmed actress first publicly revealed her breast cancer via the lawsuit filed on August 2015, when she first claimed Mainstain failed to pay the premium for her insurance through the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
"In November 2013, SAG sent the premium invoice to Tanner Mainstain for Plaintiff’s medical insurance coverage for the year 2014. However, Defendants ignored it, failed to pay it (without informing Plaintiff) and then promptly terminated their relationship with [Doherty] effective February 7, 2014," the papers via US Weekly stated.
When Doherty re-enrolled for her lapsed coverage in 2015, that's when she learned that she had the invasive breast cancer that's since spread to her lymph nodes and led to a single mastectomy back in May.
"Plaintiff was also informed that, had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for the future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy) that Plaintiff will likely have to suffer through now," the suit also stated. In addition to surgery, Doherty has undergone chemotherapy and, according to Us, will begin radiation after a round of further treatments.
"I started thinking that I wasn’t gonna live,” Doherty said of learning her diagnosis in an Entertainment Tonight interview earlier this month. “I don’t look past today.”
The actress, who played Brenda Walsh on '90s drama Beverly Hills, 90210, also documented shaving her head as chemo treatment took its toll on her body. You can follow Doherty's progress in her battle against cancer on Instagram.
