Living in a community the size of Dubuque, one may think that issues like homelessness aren't as prevalent. However, while the problem may not be as apparent or severe as in larger metropolitan areas, homelessness does exist and persists in Dubuque.

Almost Home Executive Director Gwen Kirchhof shares that the problem of homeless fathers is a particular concern for the nonprofit she leads. "We have had twenty fathers with children seeking help over the past few months," said Kirchhof. "These are fathers working to keep their families intact, and it's vital that we help them stabilize as quickly as possible."

Almost Home is hosting the fundraiser "Party on Purpose" to raise money, resources, and awareness for those living on the margins in our community. Kirchoff reports that nearly 300 children in the Dubuque Community School District identify as homeless. That may mean they are also living with relatives or in a situation that is not a permanent shelter.

The fundraising event, Party on Purpose, takes place at 6 pm, Friday, June 10th, at Wartburg Seminary, located at 333 Wartburg Place in Dubuque.

The event will feature a special guest with former Iowa Hawkeye great Marvin McNutt in attendance to sign autographs. McNutt joins the event through the generous sponsorship of Iowa Hawkeye broadcasting great Gary Dolphin's Iron Bar.

Actor Dwier Brown, who starred as John Kinsella in the film Field of Dreams, also lends his support in an online video and silent auction item.

Additionally, the rain or shine event will have live music, food, and drinks available, and a silent auction will be held.

There is no charge to attend, and it's hosted in part by St. John's Lutheran Church. The event will move indoors should it be necessary.

Almost Home's mission is to help put people back on the path to stability by sheltering, serving, and supporting our neighbors in need with beds, clothing, and a connection to resources. Thousands of Dubuque residents benefit from the services provided by Almost Home and the Open Closet. So please join this community-enhancing event to help Almost Home.
