Upcoming “Field of Dreams” TV Series Gets $6 Million in State Funding

The first round of grant money from the Destination Iowa program was announced by Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority on Monday.

Governor Reynolds announced that the first $16.5 million of the $100 million program invests "in transformational attractions that will bolster the quality of life in Iowa communities and attract visitors and new resident," per a news release from the governor's office.

$6 million of that money will go to Universal Television for the development of the upcoming Field of Dreams TV series, which is to be filmed in several different Iowa communities: Polk, Mahaska, Boone, and Clinton counties have already been announced as filming locations.

Meanwhile, $7 million will go to the Siouxland Regional Trail System to develop a continuous, 100-mile trail that will connect Sioux City with various locations, including Mars, Hinton, Merrill, and Sergeant Bluff. $2.5 million will go to the Polk County Conservation for the Easter Lake North Shore Project, which will provide a recreational outlet for swimming, fishing, and other water sports.

Finally, $1 million will be delegated to Dallas County Conservation in efforts to complete a four-mile trail. The trail will link the Raccoon River Valley and High Trestle trail; once completed, the respective trail will be a continuous, 120-mile loop.

And keep in mind, this is merely the start of the projects to come.

The Field of Dreams TV series made headlines locally when it was announced that the upcoming Peacock streaming series wouldn't be filmed in Dyersville, where the popular movie site is located. This is due to conflicts with the Major League Baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds on August 11th, along with the Minor League game between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Quad Cities River Bandits on August 9th.

As of this writing, no casting information for the TV series has been announced. The show, which is written by Michael Schur (The Good Place, The Office), will revolve around the backstory of the characters from the popular Kevin Costner film from 1989.

The TV series will also prioritize local crews and suppliers when it comes to the production side, including construction, catering, transportation, and set decoration.
