Traffic Alert! Expect East Dubuque Delays on Hwy 20
Road construction is often a mixed blessing; with delays comes the long-term improvements leading to a safer and smoother ride for motorists.
The State of Illinois has announced the start of construction on a project long in the planning stages. The road work will impact a 1-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 20 within the East Dubuque City limits from 6th St. to Camillus near the Family Beer and Liquor Store.
Many know that area based on its proximity to the Julien Dubuque Bridge and the Van's Liquor store.
Recognized as a troublesome stretch of road, the State of Illinois covers most of the construction cost. At the same time, the City of East Dubuque will add $36,864 to the $1.2 million price tag.
The road work includes the removal of a raised median along with pavement patching and resurfacing. In addition, new lanes will create an eastbound, a westbound, and a bi-directional center turning upgrade.
Expect delays with lane closures. However, no detours are expected. Plan if you are traveling this stretch of Highway 20 or if it's part of your regular commute.
The Illinois DOT has a mid-June target for project completion.
In 2017 the Iowa DOT estimated more than 17,000 vehicles cross the Julien Dubuque Bridge daily. Therefore, the construction may add significant delays for those who rely on the bridge for their daily commute and errands.
Depending on the length of delays for travel to East Dubuque and beyond on Highway 20, alternative options may include taking Hwy 61 and the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge and Highway 35 to East Dubuque.
Or Hwy 61 to 11 and Hazel Green to Hwy 84 to Galena.
However, be aware that these routes are primarily 2-lane highways and add a few more miles and time to your travels. But if you've got time to enjoy the ride and scenery, it may be worth considering.
