Broken Lizard Launches ‘Super Troopers 2’ Crowdfunding Campaign

UPDATE: After a single day, Super Troopers 2 has already crossed the $2 million threshold needed to greenlight the film, so this thing will definitely happen. And the Broken Lizard guys still have 30 more days to keep raising funds. At this rate, Super Troopers 2 will be a $60 million movie, and one of the highest-budgeted comedies in history.

ORIGINAL POST: The men of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe — Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske — have been together since 1990, when they met and began performing together at Colgate University. They toured their first film, Puddle Cruiser, around the country (I remember when they came to my school with it in the fall of 1998), and its indie success led to their first breakout hit: Super Troopers, about the misadventures of a bunch of small-town cops. Broken Lizard went on to produce three more features, but none matched the profile and cult status of Super Troopers. Perhaps that’s why they’re now at work on a Super Troopers 2 — and why they’ve taken to crowdfunding the film on the fundraising website Indiegogo.

The site says Fox has granted Broken Lizard permission to make the movie and agreed to distribute it in the U.S. and Canada — but they’re not paying to make it, which is where the fans come in. Broken Lizard wants at least $2 million; if they hit that target they make Super Troopers 2. If they raise more than $2 million, well, then the movie gets bigger and better:

We’ve got some big stuff in the script, and if we’re able to raise enough money, you’ll get to see all of it. The more we raise, the more amazing stuff we can put in the movie. More action, more cameos, more shenanigans, and fine, more Farva.

On the perks side of things, the rewards start with behind-the-scenes access and a Super Troopers 2 script for a $10 donation and go all the way up to the actual patrol car used in the movie, which will set you back a cool $35,000 (you’ll also be credited as an “Indiegogo Producer” on the film, which is easily worth tens of thousands of dollars). Many rewards come with a ticket for the finished film, so if you plan on seeing Super Trooper 2 anyway, backing it now’s like pre-ordering your seat several months in advance. There’s also a bunch of rewards that involve attending or participating in a “Beerfest Tournament,” which will look an awful lot like the events chronicled in the movie The Slammin’ Salmon (or Beerfest; I honestly didn’t read the fine print all that carefully).
