Shooting crimes continue to occur in the Key City, with the Dubuque Police Department responding to an early Sunday morning shooting at approximately 5:20 am in the 1800 block of Central Avenue.

Dubuque Police Department Lt. Ted McClimon stated that officers responded to the call. Unfortunately, at least one person was severely injured, with reported shots fired. Dubuque Police said one person related to the crime was airlifted to Iowa City for treatment after the early morning shooting.

Police transported one victim to UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital before being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic for gunshot-related injuries.

The Dubuque Police Department stated that while an ongoing investigation, preliminary findings point to evidence of multiple shots fired at the early morning crime scene.

At the time of the alleged crime report, no arrest had yet to be made by the Dubuque Police Department.

In 2021, Dubuque police responded to five murder cases, the highest number the city had seen since 2015. In addition, shots fired with criminal intent rose to 21, compared to 17 in 2020. However, McClimon pointed out police solved 13 of those, partly thanks to the traffic camera system, which will expand in 2022.

The most recent shooting comes on the heels of other recent Dubuque violent crime incidents, including a July 20 shooting in the 1900 block of Jackson Street at around 11 pm. A Dubuque man was taken to the hospital, treated, and released with a gunshot wound to the buttock.

On June 4 at 6:58 pm, Dubuque Police officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Central Avenue. Responders arrived on the scene with multiple witnesses and a male that had been shot. The victim, 20-year-old Taiwan Marcus Jackson Jr., was transported to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Video surveillance showed Keywani Evans shooting Jackson Jr. from behind him in the back of the head, then two more times while on the ground.

Evans was arrested at around 7:36 am the following morning after being located by Dubuque’s traffic cameras. Evans is charged with Murder in the First Degree.

On Sunday, May 29, 2022, three people went to the hospital after a shooting in downtown Dubuque. Police say officers responded to the area around West Locust Street and West 17th Street to a call for gunshots just before 3 am.
