Despite its designation as a pseudoscience, acupuncture has seen increasing popularity in America over the last several years. Research shows that over 14 million Americans have tried acupuncture at least once, up from eight million during the last study. It's become an increasingly in-demand practice for pain and stress relief, with a global market worth $24.55 billion in 2017.

Galena is now home to a brand new acupuncture office, as of June. Connell Acupuncture Clinic, led and co-owned by husband/wife Richard and Megan Connell, now sits just off U.S. Highway 20 West, near the Ramada by Wyndham Galena. Richard is a licensed acupuncturist, while Megan serves as the clinic's office manager.

Acupuncture can be very effective for many different health issues. A properly credentialed and dedicated Acupuncturist with a thorough understanding of Eastern Medicine theories, experience and some talent can treat many disorders. - per Connell's website

Richard Connell comes with more than 20 years of experience in acupuncture and massed therapy, making him incredibly knowledgeable about the field. He's licensed to work in Illinois, Wisconsin, and even New Mexico. While primarily working to relieve his clients' pain, Connell told the Telegraph Herald/Biz Times that many patients find relaxation in the treatment, as well as feel their stress relieved after a routine visit/appointment.

If anything, the biggest hurdle is helping people get over their fear or apprehension of needles. One thing to remember about acupuncture is the needles are tiny. They are even more fine and slimmer than syringe needles, or ones used for vaccine distribution. The sharpness simply isn't there. Connell iterated that most people emerge surprised at how they hardly felt a prick, or even knew the needles were being placed.
