Baseball World Reacts to Shocking Death of Jose Fernandez
Baseball is mourning the loss of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, who died early Sunday morning. He was 24.
Fernandez and two other men in a boat died. Authorities found the vessel around 3 a.m. upside down on a jetty in Miami Beach. Officials believe speed may have played a role in the accident. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been involved.
Fernandez had announced last week on Instagram that his girlfriend was pregnant.
A first round draft pick in 2011 after emigrating from Cuba in 2008, Fernandez quickly established himself as one of the game's premiere pitchers. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2013. He had a career record of 38-17, including 16-8 this year.
Fernandez's death resonated around the baseball world.
