Get a ‘Clue’ on the ‘Killer’ Martinis at the Tri-States Martini Shake Off in Dubuque

The 2026 HAVlife Tri-States Martini Shake Off in Dubuque delivered another great night, and it continues to be one of those events my wife and I look forward to every year. This time around, it had a fresh feel thanks to the new setting, and it did not disappoint. We spent the evening in the beautiful Reflections Room at Q Casino & Resort, located just off the new The Key Hotel, and it really set the tone for the entire experience.

From the moment we walked in, the energy was high. The room was filled with people enjoying themselves with a built in game of "who dunn'it," tables lined with silent auction items, and a steady flow of incredible food and drinks.

Events like this are always fun, but it is worth remembering that it all supports the mission of HAVlife Foundation, which works to prevent lost potential for at-risk youth by creating opportunities in sports, music, and the arts. That makes every sip and every bid feel like it truly matters for more than just fun.

The participating establishments really brought their A-game this year. There were a lot of creative martinis to try, and more than enough to go around, each of which will be featured in a photo gallery at the end of this article. A few favorites stood out right away.

The jalapeño pineapple martini from Pub 225 had a great balance of sweet and heat. The espresso martini from Grape Escape was smooth and rich. It was probably my favorite and a perfect pick-me-up. Of course, you can never go wrong with the classic martini from Copper Kettle: it was great to see it represented and holding its own with all the creative entries.

Beyond the drinks, the food, music, and overall atmosphere made the night feel complete. There was even a themed, room-wide game of Clue happening throughout the evening. If you managed to solve it, you did better than I did. I might have been a little too busy enjoying the food, catching up with people, and making my way through the long list of unique martinis.

All in all, it was another successful night for the Tri-States HAVlife Chapter, Q Casino & Resort, and every establishment that took part. The turnout was strong, the setting was top-notch, and the experience lived up to the "killer" hype.
