A bobcat sighting in Iowa used to be a rare occurrence. The animals were once endangered, but now a healthy population in the thousands has them showing up more especially here in Eastern Iowa. Our neighbors to the north in Minnesota also have a large cat that roams the wild, but it is much more elusive and endangered. That is the Canada Lynx.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says that lynx are about the same size as a bobcat but have brown fur with a white underside. It also has long ear tufts and a goatee under its chin. An adult lynx is around 3 feet in length and can weigh up to 45 pounds. But perhaps the most unique feature of the lynx is its feet. They have snowshoe-like feet that allow them to walk on top of tall, deep snow.

The lynx was once widely hunted and trapped in Minnesota according to the DNR. Due to their declining numbers, they have been protected since 1984. In 2000 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service classified them as an endangered species. There are estimated to only be 100 to 200 left in the entire state. So catching one on a trail cam is a special event. That is exactly what this video is all about. Watching the rare lynx in the wild.

These rare big cats are absolutely beautiful. My favorite part of the video is when the lynx investigates the trail cam. Those eyes look just like a house cat! Hopefully, their numbers can keep rebounding and they are able to hunt the woods of Minnesota and other states for years to come.
