Half a Million Illinois Residents Get Medical Debt Wiped Out
Would you rather win the lottery, or have your large outstanding debt erased? Sure, twelve of one, a half dozen of the other. I’m not sure of the odds of winning the lottery on Illinois, but I would have told you having your debt eliminated courtesy of the state would be a smaller number. Until now.
Excessive medical debt has been detrimental to many in Illinois
Illinois has worked a deal to erase the medical debt of half a million residents. Medical debt, along with student loan debt, is a problem for people. For those residents with debt totaling 5% or more of their annual income, or households with income 400 percent below the poverty line, the medical debt has been erased. Letters have gone out this week. If this situation fits you, keep an eye on the mailbox. Many will no doubt believe it’s a scam, and I understand that in these times, but it’s real.

The Medical Debt Relief Program went into effect in 2024 and teams with a nonprofit called Undue Medical Debt that buys full portfolios of unpaid medical bills. The state of Illinois paid $15 million to erase $1.1 billion of medical debt for those who qualify. You don’t sign up, don’t submit a form, don’t have to know somebody. The info on your medical situation is available when the overdue debt gets purchased.

The state of Illinois regularly faces criticism for how it spends tax money. In this case, they have done well for residents, who will feel a massive burden removed. This is smart Springfield.
