A debate is unfolding across the country. With data centers being built quickly, the power grid that they draw from is having trouble keeping up. The states with the most data centers may soon face the most acute power situations.

Illinois has 244 data centers. That’s the most in the Midwest. Only California, Texas and Virginia have more. These are the states that others are watching, as the data centers need loads of energy to function properly and the electrical infrastructure in most areas is not built for the excessive data center load and the day to day energy needs of the citizens.

Making things more problematic in Illinois is Governor Pritzker’s desire for in-state energy to be more green than not. Meaning more wind and solar, and less coal. Nuclear could help here, but those facilities don’t just plug in and go online. They take years to make, as do any improvements to the in state grid. In the meantime Illinois is building things that require excess energy, but don’t have it to use. When the grid gets strained, what will get turned off? The data centers? Don’t bet on it.

The irony? The artificial intelligence that requires the data centers to power it, may be able to come up with an answer we haven’t considered, but needs more power to figure it out. Until then, Illinois power bills will continue to increase with the demand.
