Hayli's Law Means Illinois Lemonade Stands May Operate Without Regulatory Fears 

Here’s a nice summertime thought to consider as January begins: a good old-fashioned lemonade stand.  The new year will bring a new law in Illinois protecting youth lemonade stand operators from what lawmakers describe as "undue government interference."  Dubbed “Hayli's Law” Illinois will prevent public health officials from requiring kids lemonade stands to hold permits.

The origins of Hayli’s law come from a threat by city and county officials to shut down a lemonade stand operated by Hayli Martenez of Kankakee in 2017.  Hayli was 11 years old at the time, and selling cups of lemonade from a stand she called “Haylibug Lemonadez.”  Effective January 1st, 2022, Hayli’s Law will mean that the sale of lemonade, nonalcoholic drinks, or mixed beverages by a person under the age of 16 will be protected in Illinois.
