‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Casts ‘The Knick’s Eric Johnson to Give Mr. Grey Some Competition
So far, all the new casting additions for Fifty Shades Darker have been women, making it seem as though the sequel does nothing to disprove the idea that this is a crazy-pants world in which everything and everyone revolves around Christian Grey. If you were getting tired of looking at that guy, good news: not only has the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel added a new male cast member, but he’s going to be competing for our attention (and Ana’s too, sure).
Variety reports that The Knick star Eric Johnson has joined the cast of both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, with director James Gray filming both sequels back-to-back for 2017 and 2018 release dates. Johnson has signed on to play assistant news editor Jack Hyde, who falls for Ana and begins pursuing a relationship, which makes Christian very unhappy. Oh, and Jack happens to be Ana’s boss, so between that and her previous “relationship,” it may be time for Ana to seek the wise counsel of a therapist.
Dakota Johnson and the cardboard cutout of Jamie Dornan will return to reprise their roles in both sequels, which were scripted by Fifty Shades author E.L. James’ husband and fellow author Niall Leonard. Kim Basinger has signed on to play Elena Lincoln, Christian’s ex-lover and current business partner, and the woman who introduced him to BDSM. Bella Heathcote (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) will play Leila, another ex-sex partner of Christian’s, who is still dealing with the mental and physical scars from their relationship.
Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on February 10, 2017, followed by Fifty Shades Freed on February 9, 2018.
