Dubuque will host a rededication ceremony on Sunday May 30th to celebrate the renovation of the Chaplain Schmitt Island Veterans Memorial Plaza.  Sunday's event will mark the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.  It will also include the re-location of the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The $3.3 million project includes a new memorial for Chaplain Schmitt composed of a decorative swirling concrete path that transforms into an elevated boardwalk extending from the Veterans Memorial Plaza over the pond. A circular landing that contains a sculpture titled "Skyward" will be located at the end of the boardwalk. An opening in the sculpture will allow visitors to read a poem etched on the inside. At night, subtle colorful lighting will be used to honor veterans and add prominence to the memorial.

Construction on the memorial started just over a year ago in the Spring of 2020.

Speakers on May 30th include U.S. Navy CAPT Daniel Mode.  Gary Dolphin is the emcee for the ceremony.
