The Search for a New GM Begins at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds, as Kevin Kotz Retires
For nearly a decade, Kevin Kotz has been a driving force behind the scenes at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds, bringing creativity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the community. As Kotz recently announced his retirement, his departure marks the end of an era that has left an indelible mark on one of Dubuque's most cherished local traditions. I have had the pleasure of sharing many years working with Kevin. Whether its speaking with him when he dropped by the studio to record a new Dubuque County Fair ad, or as part of our most recent weekly racing hour segment on Eagle 102.3 FM, Kevin is a pleasure to work with and has a real passion for his own work at the Dubuque fairgrounds over the last 8 years.
A Lifelong Connection to the Fair
Of course, Kotz’s involvement with the Dubuque County Fair goes far beyond his official eight-year tenure as general manager. His ties to the fairgrounds stretch back to his childhood, where he attended the fair as a young boy and also volunteered with 4-H. The fairground isn’t just a place of work for Kotz; it’s a space filled with personal memories, including celebrating family milestones like his very own wedding reception.
“I remember going there as a kid, and now I get to see the joy on the faces of new generations,” Kotz recalls. “That’s what makes this place so special – it’s about family, fun, and making memories.”
Leading with Vision
Kotz's leadership has been marked by a vision to make the Dubuque County Fairgrounds more than just a once-a-year event location. Under his direction, the fairgrounds have become a hub of activity throughout the year, hosting community events like Trunk or Treat, Breakfast with Santa, craft & vendor fairs, and nonprofit events that support veterans and local causes. His initiatives have helped keep the fairground bustling year-round, fostering a deeper connection between the fairgrounds and the community as a whole.
One of Kotz’s proudest accomplishments is the significant upgrades to the fairground facilities. “We’ve done a lot to improve the buildings, adding new roofs, air conditioning, and lighting to make these spaces more versatile and comfortable,” Kotz explains. “It’s about making sure the fairgrounds can be enjoyed not just during the fair, but all year long.”
Memories That Last a Lifetime
Throughout his time as general manager, Kotz has brought a sense of creativity and fun to the fair, with themed events like “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and New Orleans-style Mardi Gras parades. These imaginative touches, along with the inclusion of various characters and festive decorations, have helped create lasting memories for fairgoers of all ages.
Kotz speaks fondly of the small moments that have defined his tenure. “Seeing the smiles on kids’ faces, watching families come together, those are the moments that matter,” he says. “That’s why we do this – to be a part of people’s lives and memories.”
Looking to the Future, What's Next?
As Kotz steps into retirement, he plans to enjoy more time with his wife, grandchildren, and his favorite pastime—fishing. Yet, his commitment to the fair isn’t ending entirely. Kotz has expressed interest in serving on the Fair Board of Directors, where he hopes to continue contributing to the future of the fairgrounds.
“I’ve made so many connections and friends in this community. I want to ensure the projects we started continue to flourish, not just for me but for future generations,” Kotz shares. “The Dubuque County Fairgrounds is a place that should be here for another hundred years, bringing joy to everyone who visits.”
Kevin Kotz's legacy is one of heartfelt service, continuous improvement, and a genuine love for the community. As he bids farewell to his role, the impact of his leadership will be felt for many years to come, ensuring the Dubuque County Fairgrounds remain a cornerstone of joy, tradition, and community spirit.
