Let me be the first to say that a trip to Dubuque County's Balltown, Iowa is always on the cards when my in-laws stop to visit. They love to ride their motorcycle up to see us, and a trip to the amazing scenic overlook, deserves an even better meal at Breitbach's Country Dining.

The meals are always amazing and filling. Whether you're getting fried chicken, hand battered pike, prime rib, or the always outstanding all you can eat buffet, you're sure to leave stuffed, especially if you finish off the meal with some homemade pie.

Outside of dinner with my wife's family, my side even celebrated my grandma Elaine's 80th birthday at the restaurant with the whole Ehlers clan! So, while the food and atmosphere are always amazing, the history of the place is even more spectacular.

Opened in 1852 by federal permit from President Millard Fillmore, this establishment holds the title of Iowa’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and bar.

It has been in the Breitbach family since 1862, with Mike and Cindy Breitbach currently at the helm, along with their seven children who are often found helping out in various roles.

Originally serving as a stagecoach stop, the building evolved over the decades to include roles as a personal residence, hotel, grocery store, tavern, and restaurant. They currently feature a wine shed and a biergarten on site making for and even more enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, Breitbach’s history hasn’t been without its challenges. On December 24th, 2007, the original building was completely destroyed by a fire caused by a gas explosion. Incredibly the Breitbach family, with support from the Balltown community, rebuilt the restaurant in under six months. However, just ten months after reopening, the new building was lost to another fire in October 2008.

Through both these devastating events, Breitbach’s spirit never wavered. The community again rallied around the family, and by August 2009, a third building was completed and opened, continuing the legacy of this historic establishment.

Even during the reconstruction periods, Breitbach’s remained a central part of the community. A small building across the parking lot, referred to as The Gathering Place, served as a temporary bar and dining area. It now offers local wines and products, adding another dimension to the Breitbach’s experience.

Aside from the rich history and delicious food, a visit to Breitbach’s offers breathtaking views. Just a short walk from the restaurant are two scenic overlooks that offer stunning views of the Mississippi River Valley and the rolling hills of southwest Wisconsin. On a clear day, you can see landmarks over 50 miles away.
