Listen, I love a good hot sauce, but now hot sauce lovers (like me) need to check those bottles and even what they order at restaurants! A popular hot sauce sold in Illinois and a few other states has been recalled due to a potential contamination. The Karma Sauce Company LLC has voluntarily recalled specific batches of its Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo and Verde hot sauces, warning consumers about a risk that could lead to health issues if consumed.

While restaurants may be more likely to have the larger containers, everyday spice lovers most likely have the smaller bottles at home. If you’re in Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, or Ohio, check your shelves.

Here’s what the FDA says to look for to avoid getting burned:

  • Los Calientes Verde Hot Sauce (UPC: 8-51444-00803-5) with best-by dates ranging from Dec. 18, 2027, to Feb. 13, 2028
  • Los Calientes Rojo Hot Sauce (UPC: 8-51444-00810-03) with best-by dates including Feb. 7 and Feb. 10, 2028

The issue? Possible plastic contamination. This recall is classified as Class II, meaning that while the health risks are typically temporary or medically reversible, you still shouldn’t take any chances. Small bits of plastic could cause mouth injuries, choking, or gastrointestinal irritation.

If you bought the sauce from Heatonist’s online store, you can contact them at ilovehotsauce@heatonist.com for a refund. Otherwise, toss the product immediately. Remember, when it comes to your spicy intake, it’s better to play it safe than risk an unexpected crunch!

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
