The holiday season is here, and with it comes family gatherings, festive meals, and long drives across the county and state. I should know, I've already taken several trips across Iowa from Dubuque to Oskaloosa and planning several more. But as Jo Daviess County residents know all too well, this season brings extra risks on Illinois roads, too.

Ice, snow, drifts, and wind make driving difficult enough without our added celebrating (or over-celebrating). That’s why the sheriff’s office is teaming up with law enforcement across Illinois for the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns, running from December 12th, 2025 through January 5th, 2026.

“This season, let’s make safety our shared priority. If you plan to drink or use impairing substances, plan ahead for a sober ride home and always wear your seat belt. Driving impaired isn’t just dangerous—it’s unacceptable. We’ll be out in full force, and no excuses will be accepted.”

-Lt. Kirk Raab, Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office

The Sheriff’s Office has been increasing enforcement thanks to a federal STEP grant for 2026. This grant helps deputies target high-risk areas, keep an eye on problem intersections, and promote responsible driving habits. Residents will likely notice more patrols, occasional checkpoints, and increased messaging encouraging responsible driving.

The latest Thanksgiving enforcement report gives us a quick snapshot: in just under two weeks, deputies issued 4 speeding citations, 5 seat belt citations, 1 DUI arrest, and 6 other traffic citations. Every citation is a reminder that impaired or distracted driving can have serious consequences. This is especially the case when combined with icy roads, snow drifts, and the other winter weather hazards we know all too well (I'm looking at you Bambi).

The message is simple: buckle up, slow down, and plan a sober ride. Keep your friends and family safe by taking keys from anyone who’s impaired and making sure everyone gets home safely. With more eyes on the roads this holiday season, Jo Daviess County law enforcement is working to make sure celebrations stay full of cheers; not tears.
