Eggs Sold in Illinois Linked to Salmonella Outbreak: Massive Recall
If you've bought eggs recently in Illinois, it might be time to double-check your fridge for the kind and source. According to the FDA, a salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 79 people across seven states, including Illinois, and the source has been traced to brown cage-free and organic eggs distributed by August Egg Company based in Hilmar, California. The company has recalled 1.7 million eggs sold under various brands from February through May 2025.

Health officials are urging Illinois consumers to look for cartons labeled with Julian dates between "32" and "126" and plant codes "P-6562" or "CA-5330." These can usually be found stamped on the side of the egg carton. Affected brands include Clover, Marketside, O Organics, Raleys, and Simple Truth, among others.
If you can’t confirm where your eggs came from—or if you’ve already discarded the carton—it’s safest to throw the eggs away. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 21 people have been hospitalized, although no deaths have been linked to the outbreak so far.
Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, and dehydration. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. While most people recover within a week, the illness can be more serious for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
The FDA advises consumers to thoroughly clean any surfaces or containers that touched recalled eggs, including refrigerator shelves and cooking tools. Wash your hands with hot, soapy water after handling eggs, especially if you're unsure of their origins.
If you develop symptoms after eating eggs, especially if they’re severe or don’t go away, contact your healthcare provider. Visit the FDA or CDC websites to stay updated or check if your eggs are included in the recall.
