‘Six Feet Under’ Creator Alan Ball Sets New HBO Family Drama
True Blood may have flown off the rails in later years, but Alan Ball’s other HBO totem Six Feet Under stuck the landing to become one of TV’s best dramas. Here’s hoping he does it again, now that Ball’s next family drama has an official series order at the premium cabler.
Deadline first broke word that HBO has given a series order to the Six Feet Under creator’s untitled family drama, the first project of a new two-year deal to continue Ball’s 15-year HBO tenure. No vampires or funeral homes this time out, though there’s at least something supernatural at work by the informal description:
The untitled series focuses on a contemporary multi-racial family: a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife, their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia, and their sole biological child. This seemingly perfect, progressive family is in actuality harboring deep rifts. Then, one of the children begins to see things others cannot. Is it mental illness? Or something else? The series is a tragicomic meditation on the complicated forces at work on us all in America today.
