‘Enchanted’ Sequel Lands ‘Rock of Ages’ Director Adam Shankman

It’s been a little over two years since Disney officially announced a sequel to 2007’s delightful live-action fairy tale comedy Enchanted. In the time since then, the studio has been loading up on live-action remakes of older classics, and though you’d think Enchanted 2 would fit right in with their current release plan, there’s been no further talk of it — until today, that is, as Disney has tapped Rock of Ages director Adam Shankman to work his magic on the long-awaited sequel.

Per THR, Shankman will direct Disenchanted, the sequel to the 2007 hit musical film Enchanted, which delightfully subverted the princess movie tropes established by Disney itself. Amy Adams is expected to return to reprise the role of Princess Giselle (as if she could ever be replaced) in the new film, which the studio is looking to film next summer — which sadly means we probably won’t see Disenchanted until 2018, a full 11 years after the original hit theaters.

Enchanted starred Adams as a princess who is transported from her animated fairy tale land to our real, live-action world. Followed to New York by her intended Prince Charming (James Marsden) and an evil witch (Susan Sarandon), Giselle meets and begins to fall for a lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who is also set to marry someone else. Together, with the help of a little music and magic, they defy convention and choose their own happily ever after.

The sequel reportedly takes place 10 years after the first film, as Giselle has become uncertain about the “happily” part of that ending and unwittingly sets off a chain of events that affect both our world and her fictional animated homeland.

As of now, only Adams seems to be set for the sequel, but with a director in tow, it shouldn’t be much longer before the studio announces more returning (and new) cast members.
