It's that time of the year when families start pulling out their bicycles for summer.  There are a few things you should do before setting out on a ride... and that includes checking out this free family event this weekend!

Karen stopped in from Unity Point Health/Finley Hospital with Pam from The Bike Shack to chat about this weekends Safety Rules Bike Rodeo.

The event is scheduled (rain or shine) this Saturday, May 19th at the Dubuque County Fire Training Center at 14928 Public Safety Way in Dubuque from 9am to noon.

Karen told us that even though your bike might look the same as it did when you put it away last fall, you should probably give it a once-over to make sure it's in optimum riding condition.

Are you tires properly inflated?  Maybe your son or daughter grew over the winter and the seat needs adjusting.  The Bike Shack will have folks on hand to give your bicycles a quick look and will let you know if it's in need of any adjusting or repair.

Karen mentioned helmets are a really important habit to create for your kids now to protect them and prevent possible injuries.  The Safety Rules Bike Rodeo will also show you the proper size and fitting for a helmet and the correct way to wear it.

During the event you can check out safety stations, bicycle registration, tour a fire engine, ambulance and police car.  You'll also meet Dupaco's Dollar the Dog and the Dubuque Bicycle Police.

You could also win one of over $1,000 in prizes, including a new bike from The Bike Shack or a bike helmet!

The Safety Rules Bike Rodeo is made possible by Dupaco, Unity Point Health/Finley Hospital, The Bike Shack and more... so don't miss out!  See you Saturday!
